It is most tragic that things came to that. The civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had to pay a terrible price because their military leaders would not face the shame of surrender. Furthermore, both the Japanese army and navy were working on the atomic bomb. They were very close to completing it; not with the explosive destruction of our uranium and plutonium bombs, but “dirty” bombs, to kill off all life. The Germans had shipped them a large supply of uranium by submarine in April 1945 to complete their program. The plan was to drop the bombs on the Panama Canal zone, San Francisco and Bremerton WA. Large, aircraft-carrying submarines would travel to these three targets, surface, quickly launch the planes and destroy the targets. But, while the U-boat was in mid-Atlantic, it received Admiral (Fuhrer) Donitz’s order to surrender to the nearest Allied port. While the two Japanese officers on board took their own lives, the German captain surrendered to a U.S. Coast Guard vessel, which took it into Portsmouth NH. Would the world have mourned the people of San Francisco, Bremerton and Panama if the Japanese received that uranium shipment, and completed their goal? How many of YOU would not have been born if your father, or grandfather, had to invade the Japanese homeland?
