We all have the right to discriminate. At the polls. On the internet. At the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. (Coming out on DVD soon.)

pretty good play on words …… a drag race for people in drag…

of course ,pab, you know you’re going to hell for even implying that mister white anglo saxon protestant would dress up in drag for any reason. Of course he HAS appeared at fund raisers wearing his surgical scrubs.wowee. that alone makes me want to move to KY so I can vote for him. if you can’t trust your doctor to represent you against those pesky people of color, who CAN you trust?

Rand’s point was that violating the Constitutional right to free association, no matter how noble your intent, is dangerous. You can and should write laws to force governments to be non-discriminatory, and government discrimination was the primary problem, but using federal force against private businesses was asking for trouble. Still, he’d have voted for the Civil Rights Act despite its flaws and it was passed with Republican votes. Senator Bush Sr. voted for it, Senator Gore Sr. voted against it. But go ahead, beat up on Rand for making an academic point about the Constitution. It’s not like the document means much anymore.

Another confused comment from TJ. We have a social contract in our civilization that says that our elected government has the power to do what we would want collectively. The “force” as you erroneously describe it is actually the collective will of the American people. Nobody forced you to be an American. You may leave whenever you wish.

Technojunkie is right. It is crucial to separate government and private activity, and just because a business is open to the public does not change its status as a private enterprise with full freedom, including the right to be a jerk.

And a confused comment from SmokyStover. Social contract theory does NOT say that government has the power to do whatever the people demand. That is the excuse used by Nazis and Soviets to justify every horror. In a free country (which there is still hope we can be), the majority just gets to chose its representatives, not decide who gets killed, cooked, and eaten.

As for Ghost Keeper, keep in mind Pab is Canadian and so follows British grammatical usage. For the Brits, collective nouns tend to be plural, while for Americans they tend to be singular. Thus you will see British headlines like “Parliament DEBATE New Policy” but American headlines like “Congress DEBATES New Policy”.
