You poor soul. You didn’t hear that migrant accidentally dropped the weapon and it went off. He found it while being forced to subsist eating out of the garbage.

One of these days we will figure out just locking people up leads to worse criminals. We should have a long term focus on cleaning up bad neighborhoods and rehabilitating people rather than pure punishment.

OK Ted – I’ll bite. What do you suggest. Should we repatriate those criminals into decent neighborhoods so they can learn from their neighbors how to conduct themselves in polite society? No neighborhood wants them – I certainly don’t want a rapist, murderer or arsonist living next door to me?

We lock people up to keep them segregated from the general public so they don’t prey on the public more.

You can always find one example that’s supposed to “prove” the generalization. Unfortunately for that point of view, it means nothing. There are a lot of bad people who are not immigrants.

@Ted – Other companies employ capital punishment to end the problem. I’m not against the death penalty but I would find it difficult to vote for the extinguishing of a life (even a Gacy or a Dahmer).

ICE did not seek a warrant or court order for SF to detain the illegal immigrant. That the release had more to do with our criminal justice system/immigration system and nothing to do with sanctuary city. Sanctuaries cannot harbor felons.“But Immigration and Customs Enforcement erred in not seeking a warrant or court order for his arrest and he was released in accordance with city law in March.”http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/05/opinions/reyes-shooter-doesnt-represent-immigrants/index.html?eref=rss_topstoriesLooks like the family will have to file a lawsuit against ICE if it can.

If you want to spend money on immigration than spend them on the courts so they can clear the backlog of immigration cases. Illegal immigrants are set free until their immigration case can be taken up by the courts, which can be years. Instead of making illegal immigration a crime and jailing, them deport. Lastly, I think any increase in spending should also be an increase in taxes so that people can vote with their money what is important to them. When cost are just put on debt and do not “cost” us anything people do not make weighted decisions. If people want to build a big fence and pay for it, I am OK with it. But I think it would be cheaper to have a seasonal worker permit, work on raising the quality of living where these people live so they do not want to leave their home, speed up expand immigration courts, do not imprison them in the US for just illegal entry, deport them, and the criminals give them to the governments they came from to serve their time there. “Beginning in 2005, the government has taken a more hardline approach to immigration offenses, and prosecutors have moved to charge violators with illegal entry or re-entry, rather than simply deporting them. Those convicted can face between six months and 10 years in prison, depending on past criminal history.” “Because of punitive drug laws, drug offenders still make up more than 46 percent of the federal prison system, according to the Department of Justice. Immigrants are the third-highest category of offenders, at 11 percent. But this year, more than 60 percent of all federal criminal convictions have been for immigration-related crimes, federal data show. It’s a momentous shift from a decade ago, when drug violations were by far the most common federal charge.” “The expanding pool of federal inmates has meant steady business for the two largest U.S. private prison corporations, particularly as populations in state prison systems have begun to decline. Last year, Corrections Corporation of America derived 30 percent of its revenue from federal contracts with the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Prisons, a total of $546 million, according to company financial statements. The GEO Group received more than 25 percent of its revenue from those two agencies last year, a total of $384 million.” “Both companies have spent millions of dollars lobbying the federal government over the past decade, and four of CCA’s senior executives came from the federal Bureau of Prisons. A GEO Group board member, Norman Carlson, was a former Bureau of Prisons director.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/23/undocumented-immigrants-prison_n_3792187.html

@Mike Herman – Agreed. Its an area where I just don’t have the stomach for the vote but I’m glad we have capital punishment for the monsters who walk among us. Legal or Illegal.
