Per Wikipedia, the site in New Orleans used to be known as Tivoli Circle after a carousel there before the fun ride was replaced by the statue of General Robert E. Lee in 1884 (by which time his reputation had mellowed.) At the time, NO was trying to “modernize” up to the Jim Crow standards of the rest of the South.
