Actually, the advice IS a farm adage. Just because a hen lays an egg doesn’t mean it will produce a chicken. Every egg in the grocery store would NEVER have produced a chicken; they were never fertilized by a rooster.
Nor will refrigerated eggs produce chicks even if said eggs were fertilized.
