    No, the Washington Monument is in the shape of an obelisk. The monolith from 2001 was a big black rectangular prism with proportions (according to the book) of 1:4:9 …

    The monoliths represented either catalysts for expanding human existensial knowledge, or markers that humankind had achieved same. Phone booths are getting pretty rare, what with them new-fangled cell phones and all.

    In fact, I think the last person I saw using a phone booth was Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street”. He was carrying it around and would hold it up to his ear. Had a big antenna on it that would make a ham radio operator proud . No, wait- that was a cell phone, circa 1991…

    If it works, that would definitely be a sign of an advanced civilization. The fact that the ones on Earth were constantly vandalized helped usher in the cell phone.
