People have short memories. This situation is nothing compared the uprisings in the 1960s, Watts, Detroit, and so on. There was one night of not much looting, and since then it’s been pretty peaceful. The black community in Baltimore is working hard to keep this peaceful, and they deserve a lot of credit.Another observation: this is largely a leaderless movement. Black communities all around the country are getting together to make themselves heard, and one hopes to bring about some change, but there is no leader and not even a group of leaders. There are many local leaders — in Baltimore, some really impressive pastors, some members of the city council. But there’s no Dr. King, no Malcolm X (no Jesse Jackson, no Al Sharpton). This is happening because the community is reacting. At some point maybe some leaders will come forward, but this is a movement led from below.
