Even small catfish can be mean.In our area are mudcats – small but have spines!One could be wading in a pond, through soft mud, and step on one of them resulting in a foot puncture!
Frank was taking a little geographic liberty here, as Rocky Gorge is a local reservoir, but not near the BARC.
