Earl gives her a compliment – I would certainly take it as one – and she smacks him down. Not nice, Opal.

Not independently of her brain. Just independently of her eyes. Not the same thing, ya know.

I really get tired of all the Opal meanness. She does all the work – cooking, cleaning, etc. He lays around on the couch all day and gets in the way. Somehow SHE’s the bad guy. No wonder she smacks him down. He’s pretty worthless.

“….all the times he has to cart her around because she wouldn’t get her own drivers license.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Yeah, and driving is so tiring. When they get back home, I’ll bet he falls into his chair exhausted. And just a passing thought— maybe her eyesight is so bad that she can’t get a license !

Judge not, lest thee be judged.

My mother didn’t like to drive & she got to where she wanted to have my dad around all the time. So he willingly either drove her or went to do the errands himself.

I had thought Opal didn’t drive, but wasn’t she driving the Studebaker a few months ago? I have always loved the strip — it shows the give and take of the long term committed relationship, with the normal snipping and chiding never really threatening that commitment!

My mother knitted a lot of sweater sets for me in the late 40s. She’d read a book while knitting and would stop occasionally to see where she was and count the stitches on the needles.
