During the effing Cold War, pretty much the only scenario for the US using a nuke first would be a full-on Soviet offensive steamrolling Germany. Even then it was considered risky, because the USSR could retaliate by using nukes of its own. The idea that Obama is somehow much less willing to use nukes now is rather dubious - it’s just that with the USSR gone the way of the dodo, a scenario that would FORCE the US to use nuclear weapons is much less likely.
It’s sad that the US leaders not acting as swaggering drunks is considered a sign of weakness.

Yes, because just bombing the living snot out of everything more than 10 feet tall is so much better. Heck, just ask the Serbs, Iraqi, or Afghanis. Oh, woe is us, we only spend more than any other country on conventional weapons, we can’t defend ourselves against a two-bit country like Iran… And that’s before we get pushed to the wall, in which case, as always, all options are on the table.
