There’s a reason all those prisons we set up, not just Gitmo, are nearly empty now, less than one percent did anything. Go into an impoverished community, offer big, not HUGE bucks for turning folks in, and voila!
Move the real bad guys to supermax in the states, close Gitmo.
No, not nuts – realistic. Acknowledging that the Five were mainly Taliban politicians, not necessarily Al Qaida; that they will be held by Qatar for a year; that they might not want to return or enter the battlefield anyway; and that only 10,000 non-combat Americans will remain, what difference does five more Afghans make among thousands who will kill the American invaders if given the chance? Afghanistan was and will always remain a dangerous place for foreign invaders, and five more Afghans who resent their presence will not change that one way or another. Abandoning an American prisoner of war goes against military culture.
During WW1 and 2, many German and Italian POWs were held in the borders of the USA. The only reason the POWs of this ‘war’ were held in Cuba was to enable the “interrogation tactics” used without having to combat the courts within our borders and to avoid the Constitutionally designated rules for treatment and care of prisoners… speedy trial, self incrimination, etc etc.. It has been well established that some of the prisoners were victims of neighbors’ who simply disliked them. Some were guilty of attempting to join an anti gov’t/USA militia. A very small number of prisoners were actual combatants/criminals.People who believe that Ends justify the Means support and approve of what the US gov’t did in Guantanamo. People who support and approve of the Constitution above Ends/Means are heartsick and embarrassed by our gov’ts actions. Bring them to Supermax Prisons? Why so they can personally convert more homegrown terror cells, can get high priced lawyers, and probably get citizenship from President Obama.
And, ofcourse, they won’t go back to terrorism. I am sure that you are right. All of these terrorists will give up on terrorism and go back to their homes a pen automobile repair shops instead. They no longer want to destroy the life and culture of the west.

We could of course learn from Mongols, British, and Russian expeditions, among others over the centuries, and find that the best way to get them to stop wanting to kill us, is simple, get out of their country and stop killing their kids! (That goes way beyond just Afghanistan, with our overt, and covert, invasions for hegemony.)
