Although not a fan of Steve Scalise (Don’t know him, really) people can, and some do, change their attitudes over time. Thank God, I have,in some matters. Harry Truman WAS a KKK member earliy in his life. Yet it was he who integrated the armed forces. LBJ was a bigot, yet knew that the country needed Civil Rights legislation. Even Nathan Bedford Forrest, that most-feared confederate cavalry general, who was a slave trader before the Civil War, and stood by as his troops massacred Black Union troops at Fort Pillow, saw things differently after that war. Shortly before his death, he came to a meeting of Black members and apologized for how he treated them during, and before that war. And, how many of us saw former Alabama governor George Wallace, on “60 Minutes” shortly before he died? The human capacity for reflection, self-judgement and voluntary atonement gives us some hope yet!
