    I’ve had some experience with kiddie trikes, and (as opposed to my youthful memories) the shaft of the pedals are so short there’s no leverage, and the kids can’t move except on dead level, smooth ground. Useless.

    I did teach my niece to ride a bicycle: I am too fat to run alongside holding her up, but we live on a slight slope. I had her coast with her feet down, and she got the hang of balancing and at one point just started pedaling. Down side was, she didn’t have the braking reflex and her first spill was when she went too fast and put her feet down to stop. Ah, well, that’s a risk I was prepared to take!
