    The weeding was the bad part. Machines dug up the sugar beets. No wonder gringos didn’t do the work for that kind of pay.

    The humor is not lost on me hijo. Giving Americans a national holiday (yet another day off) in honor of Cesar Chavez is good bit of a “jalapeno-biting satirical observation”; happy April Fools day hijo.

    As I remember it, once Chavez got the California table grape pickers organized, the growers started switching to machine-harvested wine grapes.

    It’s true that surviving grape pickers made more money, but as is always the case with union-imposed pay hikes, it is at increased cost to the farmers, the public, and most of all, to the workers whose jobs disappeared.
