Drew is telling it like it is. No matter how boring the story, it’s more rude to text during it. You listen politely and THEN complain about how boring it was.
Rude, ignorant, self-absorbed, certainly, when we find ourselves in such a real life situation, but hilarious when properly told in a fictitious work of art such as this. Great humour allows us to observe what may be our own foibles, and learn while having a good belly laugh. The current obsession with texting has reached such a bizarre level that it is highly comical in and of itself without any other storyline. The satire inherent in this strip has produced a real humorous gem out of this social faux pas.
Yes, a better tact would be to compare criticisms discreetly, after the fact. One of my more unflappable colleagues gave this advice on dealing with irritating customers/patients: “Just serve them to get them out of here as fast as possible, then we’ll talk about them after they’ve gone.”
