On the overuse of clichés, numerous years ago (when the woman who gave my friend her first grandchild was a mere toddler herself), a friend of mine described herself and her husband as “two ships that pass in the night.” Right on cue, the toddler came running out of a nearby room through the dining room where my friend and I were standing, pinballing off us on her way through. I looked at the escaping toddler and deadpanned, “And occasionally collide.” My friend now says she never said, this; but her instantaneous response to my crack was, “Not often enough!”
