That was an unusual legal tactic on Mr. McDonnell’s attorneys’ part. It isn’t working, but it appears that the prosecution hasn’t proven that Mr. McDonnell provided favors for Mr. Williams despite the absurd number of favors Mr. Williams provided for the McDonnells. Even though the entire situation stinks, it may not have been illegal.
But between the circumstances that we know, and the fact that Mr. McDonnell was willing to throw his wife under the proverbial bus to save his own skin, his political star should no longer be shining. But who’s to know? I said the same thing about Rick Sanford….but that was South Carolina. I would hope Virginia would be a little smarter, but I have more than once been proven wrong.
But Sanford was/is yet another illustration of how it’s okay if a Republican does it. They are almost always allowed to finish their term and are often re-elected.
