While it is true that marijuana has been linked to schizophrenia, alcohol consumption (THE gateway drug) is linked to way worse. We tried prohibition; all that did was establish a black market and empower the mob. We should learn from this.
Large drug cartels have diversified. Cocaine and heroin are much easier to transport and more lucrative. Marijuana is the number one cash crop in California, and many dispensaries in California deal exclusively with local growers. And you won’t find any legal dealers who would prefer to deal with a Mexican cartel.
It is not benign. Agreed. People have been smoking it for decades. People will continue.
Cigarette smoking has absolutely no health or recreational benefits, especially when loaded with additives chosen for flavor and to increase addictiveness. To compare tobacco to marijuana is like apples and oranges. They’re both fruits, but….
It is interesting that people who believe that the entire scientific community would agree to lie to the world regarding man’s contribution to climate change will blithely accept “scientific” conclusions about marijuana based on studies which are restricted in scope and in supply by the very government which has spent hundreds of billions trying to justify its classification as a schedule one drug.
That reminds me of the episode of the old show Dragnet. A couple had a child in the bath tub when friends stopped by and they started smoking the bad ole Reefer and forgot about the kid in the tub and he drowned.Dragnet 1967: Season 2, Episode 8“The Big High”
Legalization is here to stay. But it does bring more abuse by those under 18.Strange to hear the denial as the abuse of THC and alcohol both become a life long problem for a significant percent of the population.
Pot, weed DOPE make you STUPID!Yup, you got that right. Carl Sagan who admitted to smoking pot almost every day sure was stupid. One of his most apropos quotes is: “We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which Harly anyone knows anything about science and technology”.
Actually, alcohol consumption increased after the repeal of prohibition:-http://www.nytimes.com/1989/10/16/opinion/actually-prohibition-was-a-success.html
“Medical marijuana” simply works better than drugs pharmaceutical companies offer, and it’s safer, never been an “overdose”, and it is NOT a narcotic, and shouldn’t be a Schedule I, and that needs to be changed, maybe remain at Schedule III.
In years of law enforcement, never saw a violent person on marijuana, unless combined with alcohol or additional “hard drugs”, where the user consumed a cocktail, notably with PCP back then. Drunks? 90% of them were contacted BECAUSE they were being violent, or just deadly on the road.
Which, even with “recreational” legislation, it should be regulated like alcohol, and DUII should be severely treated, as it SHOULD BE with alcohol abuse, but is generally NOT!! Six or seven DUII arrests may still not get you jailed, or seriously “punished”, because so many judges and lawyers also still drink and drive- it’s the “social” thing to do after all, despite the carnage. Which, folks using pot ARE more LIKELY to STAY HOME until their “straight” again, than the guys who just have “three little beers”…
Also strains available today ARE stronger than 30-40 years ago, so all use should be relative to the strain being used.
“Varvel is really out there in right wing fantasy land. Pot is non-toxic, unlike alcohol, children will not die from too much pot.”..I suppose you think that inhaling cigarette smoke is harmless, too.
This is right on.. for ex. second hand marijuana smoke is not good for children I see the devastating effects everyday of parents that took drugs and exposed their young children to it.. very sad.
I DO understand that it isn’t “healthy”, but the same can be said for cigarettes, booze and fast food. Legalizing pot takes it out of the black market, out of the cartels because it takes out the big profits.

The fact proves you wrong, mr. Varvel, based on the Washington experince. Legalization seems the only right way forward on a national scale

The same lie again! As it is now, it’s easier for kids to buy pot than beer.

Studies show that Marijuana use harms the brain development of teenagers. I think that pot legalization will end up destroying a lot of lives.
