    Leave it in the oven. Door closed, of course. Or cover it with foil. Or put it in a room where you can close the door (if you are eating soon).

    A doggie door from the utility room, with a large fenced yard takes care of most problems— all of them with dogs, but not cats because cats can get over any fence known to mankind. That’s why most cats with access to the outdoors don’t live as long as those who stay indoors. If you want to call that living.

    Cats can be trained, though only to a limited extent. The key is, however, to let them know you will always share if it is something they can safely eat. Our boys seem to realize that they will get some of the “big dead bird,” or whatever, and so are not inclined to steal if we take reasonable precautions—most of the time …
