    I’ve wondered how it turned out that I named a rescue cat Charlie and within two months was calling her “Mamacat”. Now I know it was mind control.

    I believe that dogs & cats will eventually let you know their public name, so any name you start calling them is temporary. .Their private name (what they use when talking to each other) can be difficult to learn.

    When I got my puppy I had trouble naming him, so I sat in front of him with a list of names I liked. When I said “Mickey” he barked twice, so that became his name. fyi, he probably only barked 6 times in his 13 years of life.
