It’s a pretty good idea actually- the Peace Corps has done a lot more for America than wars, and VISTA has helped a lot of folks, oh, wait, they accomplish good benefits, and no bombs, how silly.
It’s not much different from conscription, with the excuse that the conscriptees owe Uncle Sam money that they’d better not welch on. But
they’ll end up happy, fulfilled people, so Big Brother will really be doing them a favor. Typical leftist ethics.
Another point. It is the dude in the chair who got student loans, “our money”, who now has the chance to pay us back by serving the people who loaned him the money for his education. If he provides a service, it benefits both sides of the agreement- is that a bad idea?
BTW church, Your “average” public sector is more than a tad higher than average.
Okay, indenture, which once meant something close to slavery. And, I don’t believe that indenture or any equivalent thereof was in the contract for student loans. I guess that what bothers me is the kind of public service likely to be suggested, especially with Obama types like Acorn no doubt angling to arrange things. And, what is “rewarding in a personal way” is not for anyone but the person involved to decide.
Okay, if a student signs up for med school in exchange for service to the state, that’s fine. But, if there was no advance understanding to that effect, then that form of payment shouldn’t be compelled in any way.

If there is no advance understanding, sure. I’d expect that some sort of contract would be involved if it is a binding exchange.
