Actually the IRS will work with you if you have trouble providing records. There are plenty of ways to get a deferment or even have your tax debt reduced or eliminated.
Remember that when the Bush administration lost 22 million emails through much more suspicious means (actually deleting them, not having their hard drives crash) no Republican cared. This is pure politics, and there’s no actual evidence so far that Lois did anything wrong. All they’d have to do is grant her immunity if they want her to testify. But it is crucial to the GOP that they NOT find out the truth, because the scandal needs to keep going until 2016.
