Most people don’t have the concept of the best man. Way, way, way back when, the best man was the best friend of the groom who was very handy with a sword, to prevent another man from trying to take the bride by force or fighting anyone chasing the prospective bride and groom as they eloped. Who knows how often it might have occurred but the tradition of the best man has transitioned to his holding the rings if there was no ring bearer as well as being a witness to the ceremony. Another misconception of the best man for some families is that it has to be the groom’s brother if he had one, which is also wrong.

If they’d have the wedding at a nudist colony, anyone and everyone could see who the best man is.
