Yes; there is often a “damage deposit” paid up front that the landlord keeps for those situations. If the tenant leaves the property in good shape, the deposit is returned to them when they vacate.
I had a girlfriend once from an Italian family and, given some of their businesses and properties, I’m sure there were some mob ties (I don’t believe there was any involvement in her immediate family, but definitely as close as uncles). She swore there was not, and all I could think was “yeah, I wouldn’t tell YOU about it either” (little air-headed chatterbox!)
