    Cinco de Mayo is only a big deal in Puebla. And contrary to popular belief in the States, it is not Mexico’s Independence Day. That is celebrated on September 16.

    bh12: Documented or not, they have SS withheld from their pay, have property taxes (indirectly through rent, if not directly through ad valorem), sales tax when they buy things, etc. Read even the sports section – bigotry has gone out of fashion..Robert Tatro: No nation in the world ever recognized the Confederacy as a legitimate country. UK and France gave diplomatic recognition to the fact that a civil war occurred, but no nationhood. Cotton was shipped overland to Mexico for transshipment to UK and France from Vera Cruz, but not Matamoros. Legion Estranger troops had to escort those wagons through Juarez’s pro-US bands in the north, until the battle that ran French mercenaries out of Mexico.
