I think oil prices were held artificially low for many years so Detroit could move their high-profit heavy metal models. Dollars put the duct tape on the futurist engineers.

Advertising or no, people tend to buy what they want to drive, not what someone else thinks they SHOULD want to drive.
There are plenty of car makers if American cars aren’t to your liking, buy a morris mini (or one of that ilk).
