Some unsolicited advice regarding small talk:

1. Get people to talk about themselves. They love it.2. Resist the urge to “top” what the other person is telling you.3. When your hearing starts to deteriorate as you get older, just smile and nod because you’re not going to be able to hear what they’re saying against the background chatter anyway.
