While both sides want to claim his perhaps most famous quote, and statement of true patriotism, and some on both sides do ’walk the walk", those on the extremist ends, both left AND right, have no concept of what he meant.
The most expensive “public works project” in history, put Man on the moon, and also created most of the technology that IS our “modern culture”, in order to accomplish that mission. It should be noted, perhaps, that all that technology also led to all the drones, and spying, we occasionally condemn, if it attacks “US”.

Is it possible that one of the great things about this young and evidently revered by both conservatives and liberals president is that he was on neither side of the political spectrum? If he was such a great example to both sides, then should we not actually emulate his relatively moderate viewpoints, instead of all of the virulent bickering that goes on here on this comment board?

Before Kennedy was nominated my parents didn’t like him much because he was from the conservative wing of the party, while they were Stevenson Democrats. Then after he was elected, my father worked under him, and he gained an admiration for his intelligence. Kennedy was a quick study and he seemed to know everything. But my father didn’t enjoy working for him, because, my father said, he interfered too much. Eisenhower had been pretty hands off — he expected people to know their jobs and unless there was some reason to doubt their work he accepted it. But Kennedy, my father said, was always sticking his nose into everything. On the other hand, my father thought that Kennedy was seriously troubled by the Cuban Missile Crisis and began to move away from nuclear confrontation. Over all his estimation of Kennedy rose as he worked for him. But then after Johnson became president my father became disenchanted with the administration and left the government. Bobby Kennedy changed much more than JFK did; he started out very conservative, but he really changed. It’s worth remembering that John Lewis, who is one of the the most principled people in government, came to admire RFK greatly.
I really doubt he would’ve ever changed into the blowhard, self-serving POS his brother Teddy became. Nor would he leave his girlfriend dying after a car accident.JFK actually had principles.
