Columbus Day. Why do we still celebrate a guy who DIDN’T discover America? He found a few islands in the Carribean and THOUGHT he was in China. And there were people here for, oh, about 15,000 years before Columbus missed the whole mainland. But I guess since they were not European, they don’t count…
Humans throughout history have embraced myths and fireside tales. So much of what we learn about American history amounts to children’s stories we got in grade school. I hope most adults don’t actually believe that Washington chopped down a cherry tree and told his father “I cannot tell a lie.” It’s doubtful that Ben Franklin flew a kite in a storm. It’s quite likely that he mentioned the idea as an hypothesis. Of course, Americans’ used to eat up tales like Paul Bunyan.

Where I’m living now, the kids had Friday off, and went back to school today. Seemed odd. Of course, there was still no mail.
