I blame Obama and Reid for this shutdown. Their unwillingness to compromise shows a distinct misunderstanding of how the Government is supposed to work.
The Majority don’t get their way just because they have more votes. There are real limits to the power of government in this country and the Repulicans are exercising their right to point out those limits.
Stay put! Health care is a luxury, not a right. If others do not want to contribute to sending money my way through our monetary-market system then “f” ’em.
Mr. Boehnor is, according to many sources, the only person preventing a vote on the shut down. He states adamantly that no republican will support ending the shut down, but if this is so, why does he not permit a vote so Americans can see who is being heroic, as Mephistopheles suggests above. Is it because if he is right voters will know who voted to keep the shutdown in place, and then start looking for someone to replace that person in 2014? Or is it because he doesn’t want the shutdown to end until he gets another 90% of what he wants like he did in 2010? Whatever the case, Mr. Boehnor is the only one preventing the vote and while this makes him a hero to some, it clearly identifies him as an obstructionist and perhaps, even a coward. Because, what I really think he fears, is many more than 17 Republicans are moderate enough to vote to end the shutdown. And if that happen, his legacy will be cemented as the worst Speaker in US history. We need heroes. There are few clearly visible in Washington DC or State Gov’ts in our nation.Respectfully,C.
Please do not emulate onguard here. To be fair and impartial (even though I agree with your views in general) I had to flag your cartoon efforts just as I do onguards. If the management of this site does not stop this trend, then this site will eventually become just as chaotic as our Congress is now!!
I’ve heard Mr. Boehnor say this.Let’s prove that he’s right. Put the bill to a vote and count the votes.Mr. Boehnor’s definition of fairness and who the “American People” actually are might also be decided in such a vote.He has the power to show all of America who is for keeping the shutdown in place until the ACA is overturned, and who is against it.Thank you for the reply, Harley, but it doesn’t resolve that question.Respectfully,C.
Harley, you have a first Amendment right to say what you please. I just wish you wouldn’t deal in absolutes and statements based on innuendo and opinion rather than objective facts. There is nothing I can say that will open your mind and no link I can provide you will believe as you think that I am dealing in innuendo and opinion rather than objective facts. However, I do thank you for talking instead of using insults and one line jabs. I will simply repeat that if Mr. Boehnor permits the senate bill, a bill passed by 100% of the senate, to go to a vote, and it does not pass, I will be more open to seeing what kind of compromises can be offered. You already know I consider the ACA to be flawed, but I am still adamant it needs to be repaired, not junked.I’m sorry we can’t agree on either the vote or repairing the ACA. I still would like to hear your options to reduce healthcare costs for our hospitals, states, and nation.Sincerely,C.
Same ol’ same-o – this is how Republicans “negotiate”, even as the deficit is being rapidly reduced. How many times did the Democrats force a default by refusing to raise the debt ceiling? Zero. They managed to get small concessions on Education funding from Reagan, while Reagan got his agenda on defense. This was despite the fact that Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress. Tip O’Neill was smart enough to know when he got as much as he could without harming the country. Boehner isn’t.
To be honest I only skimmed most of the article, but nowhere does it say that Boehner put the vote to the whole house,That’s because he didn’t. Boehner claims the votes aren’t there. About 20 Republicans would have to break ranks & Boehner says they won’t. But, he won’t put his word to the test.Even members that vote against a clean bill will be susceptible to primary challenges by even more radical conservatives. They vowed to stop the Obamacare & failed. They desperately need something to make this seem like it wasn’t a total defeat. At this point, the Tea Party looks like a zombie horde.
One of the main ideas behind the call to delay the mandate on individuals to sign up for the ACA was to keep as many healthy people out of the system as possible. Fewer healthy people in the systems means much higher premiums for everyone next year. They would go back down whenever healthy people come into the system, but one of the aims of the GOP was to make Obamacare look as bad as possible.
Harlequinn, Just for fun how, can the Supreme Court rule on a bill? To be brought to the SC it has to be a LAW. Been that way for a while. all the Rs have done is symbolic votes to repeal. How can you repeal a bill? Maybe you should have offered ways to make improvements to the law. That’s how the system works.
Baby Bush ran two wars on a tab while cutting taxes. Take your paycheck, spend all of it, charge up the credit cards. That’s what Rs did. Now we have to pay. These are called Facts.
