Got news for you ahab, virtually nobody signed up for it yesterday. Between the system crashing, people not understanding it, and many just curious but not willing to buy.Right now nationally hundreds, possibly a few thousand have actually signed up so far. Seems to me Americans won’t sign up at all.
Young people today pretty much ignore the government and know little about it’s function until they are faced with a situation that affects them directly. Then of course their cry is “why doesn’t the government do something!?”
The other day at Trader Joe’s one of the checkout people asked me “You’re an accountant, (assuming I was knowledgeable) what do you think of this healthcare?” He was irritated that he had to sign up for insurance, regardless of the cost. “I’m healthy, I take good care of myself and I never go to the doctor. Why should we (the young people) have to pay for everybody else?” Just to be a contrarian for the moment I brought up the increasing fine, the “you insure your car argument, and what do you do if you hurt yourself and need medical care, and finally, it’s the law.”
His ultimate conclusion that he would pay the $95 fine for the first year and see what happened later. Still grumbling about the proposed mandate, he closed with “Dude, they want as much for insurance as I pay for my cell and data plan a month!” Interestingly, many of his younger co-workers felt the same way, with the exception of some of the single mothers in the crowd that saw it as a God-send for them. I guess they’ve had to face that hard reality of sick children and no insurance.
I have always contended that we live in a country that is rich enough to pay for our health care. Our ridiculously opulent budget for the military alone could be heavily trimmed and redirected for health care and I doubt we would lose the ability to protect ourselves from invasion. It’s too bad that our government has to go about things in such a bumbling manner…

And that’s why teabaggers want to delay the individual mandate. So they can prove “government doesn’t work”. Sorry teabaggers, you will have none.
