She is just shifting her center of gravity, because her hair remains pointed in the same direction.

Oona had a two headed doll called Togetherness. She once told Nancy, that an insurance man, 2 plumbers, 4 grocery boys, 18 vacuum cleaner salesmen and she didn’t know how many bill collectors were lost in here house and never heard from again. Nancy once ran into one of the grocery boys in the house that was trying to find the kitchen, he had been in the house for 46 years. Oona had an Uncle EEK that was a midget because a magician from India cast a spell on him. EEK turned the magician into a cat, and the cat still roams outside the house. Oona also had an uncle Oaf that was a giant. Granny was seen in a few of the comics, she had a tiger in the house. I remember reading about the yo yo mirrors and the yo yo scales. This was kind of like Nancy’s dream from 1959-1963. But thanks to Guy, Oona is back and this time she is not a dream.

I told my wife she was awful pretty. She said I was pretty awful, too.

Was Bushmiller ripping off Charles Addams when he created Oona?

That’s like the old Abbott and Costello routine in reverse. Costello sees a girl walking down the street and says to Abbott that he thinks she is very pretty. Abbott tells him he is nuts and that the girl is actually ugly.

Costello then says alright let’s compromise, we’ll just say that she is pretty ugly.

Stanley may have been thinking of Wednesday Addams, but, note that at that time, the Addamses had only appeared in a few dozen single-panel cartoons spread over two decades in “The New Yorker”. Only kids who liked to read their parents’ magazines would ever have seen them, and that only a few times a year. (But now that I think of it, Stanley often tried to sell cartoons to “The New Yorker”, so he had probably seen them.) They didn’t even have names, yet; those were invented for the original TV show. And they never spoke. The closest thing today to what the Addams were then would be “Liō”.

Anyway, if Stanley took anything from Wednesday Addams, it was just her looks, and I’m sure lots of artists asked to draw “a little girl who lives in a haunted house” would come up with someone who looks like that. Oona, as I hope we will quickly see, is a character with a personality very different from any of the various personalities Wednesday has been given over the years.
