By far this is not the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen a Congress critter doing. I think Hank Johnson (D) and his question about the island of Guam tipping over and sinking if more Marines are deployed there takes the top stop for incredible stupidity from a Congressman…
McCain already knows he wants us to invade Syria. So he doesn’t need any new information cluttering his mind.-And we’d be thought of a liberators again, right?
todyoung: Those who refuse to study history will be compelled to … miss the joke. This was a standing joke about Britain (the unsinkable aircraft carrier) in the days leading up to 6 June 1944 – only the barrage balloons kept it from sinking under the weight of built up materiel.
This is just one more example of how all of Congress (Senate & House) doesn’t know the meaning of the word work. They gladly accept the pay and the perks! But unless their overpaid, bloated staff can do the work, it doesn’t get done. Lobbyists write the bills… (Congress’s work) Staff coordinates everything for them… ALL of them play games, take naps, fail to pay attention on the floor, goof off…etc. it’s already been shown that they DONOTREAD the bills. If the Congress ran itself as a real business, they’d be fired with NO benefits, and that would be what they honestly DESERVE.
Pelosi said that we had to pass obamacare to see what’s in it…no one read it. No, Nancy, it was Congress’s JOB to read the bill—-and not one of you (Sen. or Rep.) did your job. The whole lot of you are a national disgrace.
Stop writing 2,000 + page laws. Put the bills up one at a time in language that a high school graduate can read. No law should be longer than 5 pages…with NO riders.
I don’t blame McCain for playing poker any more than ALL the rest of these legislators. He’s just as bad as all the rest of them are. He’s just an illustration of the problem.
My apologies. I fixed that as soon as I discovered it. Has to do with a slow browser or have you never suffered at the hands of a computer? I do recoginze that your computer has suffered at your hands, but that is a different story…
Enoki: There was a lot of that going on today – a three, two fives, and a record of nine copies of the same entry in a row (I called the latter “not discussing, but nagging”). It takes a few seconds longer to wait and see how it posts – then a minute or two to clear out the repeats, if they appear..The fact that someone does not recognize a standing joke from WW-II does not make the one quoting it stupid, just the one complaining look at least ignorant, if not infantile. Granted, I can remember when it was current, but it has been quoted enough in documentaries that most in those formerly Allied countries should have encountered it, and thus able to understand its application to Guam. As the old stand-up comic rescue line says, “I don’t expect falling down laughter, I will settle for knowing nods.”
“I’m not defending Bush in the least, but if the best available retort…” -“In other words, always tossing out some version of “But Bush was worse because… …” is certainly no defense of Obama’s policies and actions.”-There are a couple reasons people bring up Bush all the time. -One, is that he left the U.S. economy in shambles. If you recall the economy was losing jobs at 750,000 per month when Obama took office. The S&P 500 had lost 50% of its value. Confidence in the economy was gone. And the surplus that was projected when Bush took office was deliberately turned into a deficit. Deliberately, for the Bush income tax cuts primarily for the wealthy.-Republicans/Fox “news” viewers constantly bitterly criticize Obama for adding to the deficit when it has been shrinking for some years.-That criticism is strictly partisan. Republicans passed all Bush’s measures that added to the deficit (and the national debt), including tax cuts, Medicare Part D, the Bush stimulus (remember that?) and keeping war costs hidden.-Republican obstruction and hundreds of filibusters have restrained economic growth so that they could claim ‘things got worse under Obama’.-On the foreign affairs side, Bush abandoned the hunt for bin Laden and getting rid of the Taliban in favor of invading Iraq, lying to the American people from the beginning using ‘faulty’ intelligence that the administration knew was a lie.-BUSH’S ACTIONS HAD AND HAVE LASTING CONSEQUENCES. America is war weary because of the unnecessary war in Iraq and because the Afghan war has dragged on forever. Not to mention the 4000+ American soldiers that are still dead, the money sent there and spent there, the countless Iraqi deaths and casualties and the destabilization of the region.-Do you honestly think that’s not a factor in our response to Syria?-The Fox “news” viewers on these boards hate Obama just for being Obama. They constantly claim that what Bush did has no effect on our situation(s) today.
