This is completely unfair. The sentence set by the law should never be anything more than a guide line. A judge with the ability to hand down a punishment based on the specific of the event is far more fair, reduce over crowding in prisons, and encourage people to come forward for help with problems they found themselves in through no fault of their own.
busted for drugs, spend your life locked up—-busted for murder, time served and back on the street tomorrow. this seems to be a nation badly in need of a federal-level vigilance committee.
A long time ago in an area with exclusive federal jurisdiction, we busted minor pot violations under the STATE law (we were also certified deputy sheriffs) , and the magistrate could lower just smoking a doobie to “disorderly conduct” and a $25 fine, instead of years in prison under the federal law.
As Fareed Zakaria pointed out this morning on his show, mandatory minimums ARE basically a “conservative made” profit-making tool for the private prison industry folks.
It is idiotic, and extremely costly that we incarcerate so many non-violent offenders in this country under yes, federal law. Holder just sees the idiocy, and wants to change the process for not only common sense, but what statistics and experts in the field call for.
I’ll be in the supermarket aisle in the isle of Man. I can do this for hours. The dog did a doo-doo in the dew. What will the doo-doo do to the dew. Stop me.
Well done. Here’s one from Steven Pinker:Buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. On the model of Bulls Boston bulls intimidate intimidate Boston bulls. Did I get it right?

Generally, the Conservatives profess to be the party for stringent laws and punishment, however they like to have exemptions for their friends.

Is there mandatory minimum sentencing for, oh, say, bank fraud? Insider trading? Illegal campaign contributions?

I will raze the house when the sun’s rays raise the dew. Do you think the dew will be due then? Did you see the whore’s hoarse horse?
