flake: the last fire in this area was in 1967, which meant a large buildup of fuels, especially heavy fuels, not just the fines. That increased the intensity of the fire, and probably meant that instead of quickly passing over their shelters, the fire moved hot and slow, increasing “danger”.
btw, “treehuggers” have long supported prescribed fire programs with control burns, real thinning in forest areas that isn’t just an excuse for clearcutting or commercial harvest.
Firefighting IS a dangerous job, which I did for decades. These men were well trained, and the reason they got caught in a change in this fire will be eventually revealed, long after the general public has forgotten their sacrifice made in defense of their neighbors.
We “in that community”, even after retirement ourselves, WILL remember them.

“…I hope, I think that the “worship” of sport “heroes” and so called musicians is, on the wane…”.That would be wonderful.

This is one of the best editorial cartoons I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Touches your heart and doesn’t let go.
