I was a navy brat who spent summers at my grandparents’ home in a small Mississippi town. Navy housing is very diverse and my 6 -12 year old self didn’t understand why people in navy housing were so much more polite to blacks than were the people of my home town. I was criticized by teachers for having black friends, and told I should keep to my own kind. I have little tolerance for the intolerant.That said,I don’t think Ms. Deen is a ‘hater’. I also believe she could become a voice FOR tolerance. I could also be totally wrong. However, unless she is shown to be a sheet shy of being a klanswoman, she shouldn’t be destroyed for having what might have well been a senior moment. If she is willing to redeem herself by doing speaking tours and speaking in favor of respect between the races, she should be rewarded by being allowed to keep her show as long as she has an audience.I assure you, there are people in politics and entertainment of all races who are regularly talking about the ‘others’ in derogatory terms. Many of them MEAN what they say, but haven’t been caught on tape saying such things. At least Ms. Deen’s home doesn’t have a name like Rick Perry’s family retreat. Respectfully,C.

Let’s not forget that no one will change the name of the Washington Redskins, and that name is equally offensive to Native Americans….I guess they don’t have as powerful a lobby.
And what happened to “innocent until proven guilty”? The lawsuits are still pending. And why is there a lawsuit? My feeling is that if you work in a hostile environment, get another job. If everyone did that the environment would necessarily get less hostile as the employer got more desperate.
And have you heard how Bobby Flay talks to his people? I wouldn’t tolerate that.

Hmmm, just had a thought of all those “right wingers” now offended by being called “teabaggers”, which they originally embraced, because they found it had a “nastier” meaning.
Words can have dangerous applications, as when my ancestors, who had a sophisticated system of government, and embraced education, were called “savages” by white invaders in Congress, driven from their lands, and targed for extermination, right here in the “good ol’ USA”

And the Eenie/Meenie rhyme may have been that way when and where YOU learned it, but in the deep south you caught something else by the toe. As a matter of fact, there was an incident on one of the now-defunct low-fare airlines, where a flight attendant (who was way too young to know the history) went to move people to their seats by saying: “Eenie Meanie Miney Moe/ Take your seats It’s time to go.”
The airline was sued (successfully) by a passenger who claimed it was racist, and she was fired.
You are right: Bobby Flay is not racist, to my knowledge, but he is quite abusive. Still a hostile environment, in one person’s opinion.
