Another tip my Grandfather gave me is instead of pinching the nail with your thump and index finger, to just bring your index and middle together to hold the nail. If you hit your finger on the fingernail it spreads the pressure. If you hit the fingernail on it’s side (like the first holding pattern) you end up in more pain.

I never could drive a nail all that well, so I use screws. A good wireless drill makes the job easy, and screws hold better anyway.
