This reminds me of a Really old arc in Doonesbury. When Phil Slackmeyer’s father stated that he was not opposed to a certain ethnic group being at his country club. He did qualify it by stating that they made wonderful caddies.
It’s a vicious circle: the studios mostly relegate minorities to character or action roles which aren’t the type that typically attract academy attention so there are few minority award winners. There have been exceptions like ‘Precious’ and ‘Monster’s Ball’ but it doesn’t happen often.

Awards are nice to receive but box office is an actor’s best friend!
