The Romanians were not lying about what was being sold.They claim they sold horse meat as horse meat.
Likely a Dutch trader with a history & conviction of mis-selling horsemeat for beet.

I read that phenylbutazone, a horse medicine was in the meat which is not approved for humans.Like you say, just eating horse meat isn’t any worse than beef it is a cultural thing. Horse was banned in pet foods in the US in the early 70s.
Oh, just go for Soylent Green and stop fussing over a little burro in your burger.
Part of the concern is the finding of Bute in the meat; safe for horses but not for humans.
