When my mother grew older, some neighbourhood brats realised she was living alone and started hassling her. It was pretty mild but she was nervous about it. She told me she was going to get a big dog chain and bowl to put in the yard. I reminded her that if they were watching her in the yard they’d soon realise there was no real dog. She was later adopted by a huge, fierce-looking stray (Malamute cross, I think.) The teenagers saw her out with the dog and one asked her, “Lady, is that a wolf?” She said “Yes”. “Geez,” said one…and they went on their way like little gents. Dog actually had a heart of gold and would probably have licked them to death…but they didn’t know that.

@hippogriff – Re: Yesterday’s “Off The Mark” and plungers.Actually, I know EXACTLY what a plunger mute is. I have one, as well as a straight mute, a cup mute, a bucket mute, a Harmon mute, and a solotone mute. (In a previous life, I played trumpet in the pit orchestra for a number of community theater musicals.)

CoBass: I know what you mean. My show biz career has often been in the pits too. Currently I am in three community bands (but two suspend operations when major one is in season).
