Charlene: My husband bought a grill. It cost more than my car, but that's not important. The important thing is that my husband's grill is bigger than our neighbor's grill. Our neighbor's grill can only cook 24 hamburgers at a time. My husband's grill can simultaneously cook 72 burgers, two 30-pound turkeys or nine whole chickens. And then there's the matter of quality. "You deserve the best," he said. 25,000 BTU burners... infrared rotisserie system... porcelain enameled, cast-iron grill grates.... restaurant-quality, 18-gauge, type 304 stainless steel... my husband used to spend money on sound systems and electronic gizmos... but no more. He sacrificed it all so he could provide something I never dreamed our little family would have... a $9100 hot dog!! Simon: Would you like a few pounds of grilled veggies with that? Why would anyone need to cook that much meat at one time. Yikes.

I must confess….we built an outdoor kitchen (hey, we’re in Florida) and bought a large $5000 grill. But we NEVER cook INSIDE.

This comic was written years ago, and still is up to date! Everyone scrambles to get their own outdoor kitchen that is better than the neighbor’s. I would love one too, even tho I live in the north. I do grill out on a very small, basic propane grill, every night that the weather co-operates. I have even mastered fish! Love it for all the garden vegetables that the blanky-blank roaming deer have left us. I would take that pile of veggies Simon, thanks!

We still use our charcoal-fired Smokey Joe. Not only does it cook food, but it drives away the mosquitoes. (for a little while, at least.)

HI, MOM. Happy Sunday, “Cathy” Clan.

I love the ease of grilling with propane, and do not miss the hamburgers with the taste of starter fluid mixed in. You could smell the fluid being used clear down the block on neighborhood grilling days!

I still prefer charcoal to grill with. We used an electric starter so avoided that pungent smell of starter fluid. However, my wife insisted on propane because charcoal took to long to be ready to cook. I think she missed the whole point of barbecuing – time spent waiting was time spent relaxing outdoors. Our grill is a small, inexpensive one that has lasted quite a few years – since there are not many good days for cooking outside (I will admit to barbecuing steaks on New Year’s Eve at -30C (-22F) in my younger years).
Hope everyone had a great Sunday. Did not see much of the sunshine today as I was in a dark theatre doing the lighting for the summer drama school’s presentation of the Little Mermaid. I did enjoy the day though.
