George Washington warned political parties would divide and weaken the nation. Under this cartoon, the first four posts underscore and emphasize his words. It is incumbent upon us to put aside the anger and prejudices the parties thrust at us. We have to throw a rope across the divide these parties have ripped between neighbors, and then we need to build a bridge. We can’t do this by throwing sticks and nails at each other. We can only do it by reaching out respectfully and build upon those issues and ideals with which we have agreement. Pick nine issues. Reach across the divide and say, this is what I want. Out of nine issues, I cannot believe that there is not at least one on which the largest majority of people agree. Let’s build on our agreements and set aside disagreement until that in which we are United is met and overcome. If we fail to do so, we are no longer the United States of America, and we insult the sacrifices of all who came together to keep us free enough to have these disagreements. Come together, and pull that damned fuse out of that bomb.Respectfully,C.
I wouldn’t totally dispute that point, except that Obama has perpetuated that war since he took office. For me this makes him equally complicit in sponsoring the war. It was an idiotic move by Bush and it’s just another continuation of Bushes policies by Obama. Ditto with the Bush tax cuts. Use whatever rationale you choose, they are still being continued, even after their original expiration date. Obama not only continued but added to the patriot act at the end of 2012. Like all politicians he talks out of both sides of his mouth (quite adeptly though) and is more concerned with his political position/legacy than in the welfare of the people.
It is inaccurate to blame Obama for the debt and it is inaccurate to blame just Bush, although you are getting closer. The blame belongs to a long series of administrations / Congresses who over-promised and under-payed. Obama has the unenviable task of figuring out how to pay the bills for committed programs and reckless wars. You want stuff, you have to pay for it.
Okay folks. Here we go. A direct quote that could be useful in this argument:“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. . . . It is a sign that the U.S. government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.”You know who said that? Barack Obama in 2006. Crazy, since he and his Democratic colleagues have been responsible for a 60% jump in our national debt, from 10 trillion to 16 trillion. So why again are you saying that this is all Bush’s fault? He clearly doesn’t share the same opinion with himself from 2006.
