I guess the 23 million Obama UNEMPLOYED didn’t volunteer to work the election polling precincts. In normal times, younger people are too busy on Jobs and retirees volunteer.

Have any of you considered that older people are the only ones who care (setting aside the question of who has the time)? Working an election is not pretty – I’ve been an election inspector for six years (and I’m not an octogenarian by any means). We work a sixteen-hour day, or maybe even longer. People blame us for the voter repression laws and vent their frustration on the people on the front lines, and all we can do is smile and hand them their ballots. charlie555 – had it not been for those octogenarians, how would you have been able to vote at all?

At yesterday’s election, our poll workers included me, a Gulf War I vet, a couple of old ladies and a clutch of college students. I’d say the average age of the poll workers was 30-35. We arrived for setup at 6:00 AM, the polls opened at 7:00 AM, closed at 8:00 PM, and the closing work kept us busy until 9:45 PM. Along the way, we had to deal with voters who came to the wrong polling place, “observers” who were bent on disrupting voters and parents with cranky toddlers. Some of us didn’t get a meal break and even bathroom breaks were chancey.

On the other hand, there’s an upside, like when I helped an elderly voter who was missing a hand complete her ballot and turn it in; taking a ballot curbside to someone who was so infirm he could not leave the medi-van but still wanted to cast his vote; assisting people who were confused by the voting process.

We have to keep any partisan notions to ourselves. If we’re assisting a voter who wants to vote for a candidate we think is vile, we are required to follow the voter’s wishes.

Radish is right – where the hell were you, charlie555 and disgusted taxpayer? You gripe and snipe, bui you don’t seem willing to do anything to help. You are the real parasites and takers, you are the ones who are holding this country back. When people like you get off your collective ass and actually do something to make this country a better place, then you have the right to complain. disgustedtaxpayer, did you even get out and vote yesterday? Remember – it’s not just people who put on a uniform and pick up a gun who serve their country – it’s also the octogenarians who work a sixteen-hour day so others can vote.

Message to Ramsey: It’s “A-L M-Z”. go back to Sesame Street (if you don’t think it’s a socialist plot) and re-learn your alphabet.
