The fact that one doesn’t believe in science does not make it non-existent. There are many imbeciles in Congress, but there’s no reason to put them on a committee that has “Science” in its name. Another Boehner failure.
It’s not nice to mock insanity. That DOES make it hard to do ‘toons about most of this year’s (decade’s?) “conservative Republican” (yes, a few radical “lefties” too) candidates. There IS a place for “ornery” people, and differences of opinion, even strong ones, but pairing nuts with stupid isn’t a good combination for parties, or the country.
So, Scott, is the “devoid of fact” the idea that Akin thinks there’s such a thing as legitimate or illegitimate rape? He does. That a lot of Republicans are bat-crap crazy and deny science? That’s all true. And even if you think you’re voting for a reasonable Republican, you’ll get the cruel, ignorant, superstitious, and insane ones too. The only rational act is to deny them all power until the party as a whole actually has a rational basis for governing.

There IS a difference between reality and speech using metaphor, exaggeration, or simile. The problem is that too many of today’s “conservatives” can’t tell the difference. On either side, illogically leaping on a single word is stupid.
When Akin said “legitimate” rape, he obviously meant a rape that actually occurred from a criminal nature, and against the woman’s will. What was STUPID was when he went on to declare that in such a rape, the woman’s body can create miscarriage based on the “legitimacy” of her fertilization, or emotional state.
Knowing people who still live on Guam and others who have, it was the people of Guam who are getting concerned about their island nation (As a territory, it’s not quite a state, NOR a “nation”, but does have a “different” status than most people assume.) being totally taken over by the military that was of concern. Johnson was expressing concern for people who weren’t even his constituents, how silly of him to try to represent ALL Americans!
Another unhelpful contribution to the debate on women’s right to make decisions effecting their bodies as well as their personal/economic future. If the object was to show how the republican party is backing Aiken despite his comments, there are better ways to do so, but since Aiken’s comments have turned his conservative constituencies away, not ideologically, but-i think- in embarrassment, that money has become a trickle of what it was. As long as we focus on abortion instead of the issues making life better for children who are already out of the womb, this country will continue to become less friendly to children and adults alike. We MUST be willing to put aside social issues until we have solved the bigger and more immediate threats. If not for the living, then for the children yet to come.Respectfully, C.
