The hedge which runs outside the kitchen window is just a gridwork of naked sticks, so I hang 1/2 kg (1.1lb) grapefruit-sized fat&crushed nut balls inside nylon mesh in between the branches. The small (and the larger…) birds love them and can find “safe” places where they have their rear protected while pecking away. There can be a dozen birds surrounding each ball while others are waiting for their turn to find a free spot. Some individuals are smart and stay on the ground eating all the debris falling down while the others are busy digging in on the balls above them.
