Ages ago, a radio DJ postulated the existence of the “James Brown Car Alarm.” Over a loop of Brown’s “OW!” cry at the beginning of “(I Feel Good) I Got You,” the fake ad noted the alarm’s features: “It’s loud! It’s long-lasting! It’s got more soul!”

We used to have problems at my condo complex in central Florida when the Space Shuttles were landing, particularly the overnights. Management would put up signs asking people to please turn off the car alarms before going to bed (we were in a good neighborhood, plus we had on-site security as well as cameras). Inevitably, some numbskull or two would forget and, lo and behold, the 3 am bounce back of BAH-BOOM!!! BAH-BOOM!!! was followed by *Whooop whooop whooop!!! Enh enh enh enh enh!!!! VREEE!!! VREEE!! VREE!!" (repeat), immediately followed by babies crying and everyone running to their windows to watch for the scofflaw, usually some guy in just a pair of pajama pants or swim trunks running out to the parking lot. (Yup, got dressed in a real hurry…….) .It got to the point that some of us were taking non-monetary bets on which of the neighbors it would be. I usually played it safe and went with the non-Floridian relatives who were using their grandparents condo in the off-season (non-winter).
