Mr. Peirce, I need a little advice about writing a book. I’ve started writing one, but I can’t figure out how many pages per chapter there should be. I tried looking through how many pages you have in a Big Nate chapter, which is around 20, but you have large drawings of his own papers that are lined and everything, which take up a lot of space. In my book, I let a whole day pass in one chapter, and now I can’t figure out what to do. My book is supposed to have around 4 to five days included in it, and I wanted it to be at least around 200 pages long (I have 18 so far). Also, is there any way that I could possibly communicate with you about this topic without having to post here? Thank you!

Wow that is really lame Nate.

Funny. The people who tend to post things like “first comment” on YouTube videos are ruthlessly bashed and labeled as brainless 12-yr-olds. I guess this is their safe haven.

It’s kind of like a mixture of comics and a novel. I decided to plan and summarise each chapter, and then go ahead and write each one when I’m done. I started the first one with about 20 pages, so I might do the same to the rest of the chapters. It’s basically just me and my friends in the story, and I decided to base it on my real school schedule, so I thought that maybe one lesson per chapter should do.

I see, hehe. I like poetry.

Another dilemma I’m having now is the illustrations. . I’m so used to drawing my cartoon characters with long heads and stick eyes, because in a way I’ve ‘adapted’ to the way Big Nate characters look, and so I draw my main character like you see it on the left < (the picture) though that one is just a picture of Nate, though I wanted to make it look like me because I spray my hair like that haha. The thing is, now I’m trying to draw my character differently so that if my ‘book’ ever gets famous (which it probably won’t haha) people won’t think that I’m copying B.N :( The reason I started adapting to it is because the author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid said that it’s better to try and re-draw you favourite cartoon characters, and on the back of I Smell A Pop Quiz, it says that Lincoln also copied drawings of Peanuts. I’m so confused xD

Your poems are really good!

I found the perfect one. The head isn’t as long as B.N characters, and the hair is lined instead. I might also make the bodies taller. I tried doing circle eyes, but to tell you the truth, they look kind of freaky, so I changed my mind about using them, haha. :P It’s okay if the eyes are lines too, right?

Re: today’s strip….it looks like Nate just keeps getting trounced, since about a couple days before school even started. And that’s even without benefit of a good Halloween “treats” story this year………..ha ha

Cool, you’re writing poetry too? I have a collection of 28 children’s poems so far, and when I’m done I’m going to try to send it to a publisher.
