Despite the fact that we pulled their tushes out of the fire twice in the previous century, I really see little reason the French should have to speak English, especially if we’re visiting them. I tried to pick up at least some survival German when I went to Austria a few years ago. I fully did not expect everyone I encountered to be able to speak English, despite my wife (who was Austrian by birth) telling me Austrians learn English in the schools like our kids are now being taught Spanish. And I was right.
