Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.
Proverbs 22:6
Children will behave to the limit that you train and discipline them to. I have 4 including a son with HDAD and a son with Ausbergers – the same principle always applies. You have to lovingly and patiently TRAIN them what to do and how to do it and what the boundaries are. When they transgress those boundaries, you lovingly but firmly reinforce the boundaries with MEANINGFUL discipline that they will remember next time and choose, instead, to obey your rules. If you’re mad, wait until you can discipline without anger so they clearly know that it is because they broke the rules that they earned punishment. Being consistent with your rules and boundaries is the toughest gig in parenting but it makes for GREAT children! Mine range in age from 9 to 19 and we constantly get compliments wherever we go on how polite, respectful and well-behaved they are.
