In the 2016 campaign, Trump kept promising that he would release his tax returns, as soon as the [fictional, non-existence, mythical, no more real than the abominable snowman, little green men from mars or a still-alive Elvis] “audit” — notwithstanding that being under audit has no bearing on being able to release tax returns, notwithstanding that Trump has never even shown his audit letter(s), notwithstanding that any audit relevant to 2016 would be done by now, and notwithstanding that every previous president going back almost 50 years released their tax returns WHILE UNDER AUDIT (since tax returns of all sitting presidents are routinely audited).
NOW, of course, bait-and-switch (lying, crooked) Trump moves the goal posts. He says the people elected him without his tax returns (he was not “elected”; being “elected” means getting the most votes; he won a presidential selection process in which voting is one element of a state-based, not wholly vote-based process.
But this is disingenuous. To the extent that people voted for Trump with regard to tax returns, it was based on his promise that he WOULD RELEASE THEM. And now he is not going to.

Trump was lying. Surprise! Surprise!
